To the tune of Manjianghong · Rereading an old poem, remembering contact renewed after years
Turning the old verses again, I first recognise the strength I spent then.
I once took it all apart so finely: a few words turned a thousand times, breath faint and voice rough.
Locking every door, I made my body a lock; private words, turned over, all became thorns.
For all my earnest urging, spring was deep beneath my tongue, yet the flowering time lay apart.
The name appears again; the page is suddenly wet. Words can resume; time is hard to turn back.
Let word fall silent again; I do not press for news.
Only when words enter the growth-rings do they acquire resonance; the mark hidden in the grain can still be read.
I hear the bell return; daylight’s shadow crosses the cold branch. An ordinary day.
